Caption: Electronic ecosystems. Dr Kerstin Dautenhahn seen holding one of the robots she uses for social group studies. Dautenhahn proposes that when a group of robots, each with different abilities, are assigned a group task some sort of social organisation will evolve. This could lead to a kind of collective social intelligence. Scientists studying primates think that this sort of social interaction is a prerequisite for the ability to solve abstract problems. The robots are programmed with behaviour observed in very young children. Photographed at the German National Research Centre for Computer Science at Bonn.
