Caption: Marram grass. View of marram grass, Ammophila arenaria, growing in a coastal sand dune. Marram grass is important in coastal ecology, since it is one of the commonest species to stabilise sand dunes. It is frequently planted for this purpose. The leaf has special characteristics which help it to conserve water and withstand salt. The leaves also have spines that discourage foraging animals.
