Caption: William A. Doberck (1852-1941), Danish astronomer. Doberck became the first director of the Hong Kong Observatory from its foundation in 1883 until 1907. Before this he worked at the observatory at Markree Castle, County Sligo, Ireland. Here, the telescope he is using is the 13-inch Cauchoix objective, on an equatorial mount. The telescope pier is a pyramid of black marble blocks (see C014/5294).
