Caption: Richard Ernst. Portrait of Richard Robert Ernst (born 1933), Swiss chemist and pioneer of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), an important imaging technique in chemistry and medicine. Ernst began working with NMR in 1966, a time when the technique could only be applied to restricted range of nuclei. Ernst greatly improved the sensitivity of NMR equipment. His development of Fourier Transform NMR greatly improved the range of nuclei that could be observed. He also developed two-dimensional Fourier transform NMR which allows very large molecules to be studied. These developments won him the 1991 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Photographed in 1995.
