Caption: Sir Arthur Eddington in 1927. Portrait of the British astrophysicist Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944). Eddington pioneered the study of internal stellar structure. He theorised an upper limit on the mass of a star and also discovered the mass-luminosity relationship in stars. In 1919 he made observations of stars near the sun during a solar eclipse. His results were hailed as confirming a prediction of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. Although the effect has been verified, Eddington's data has been disputed.
