Caption: Eugene Burton Ely (1886-1911), US aviator, sitting in an aeroplane. Ely's flying career began in 1910 by crashing a friend's aeroplane. He bought and repaired the wreck, and ended up working for the plane's designer, Glenn Curtiss. On 14 November 1910, Ely performed the first take off from a ship, and then achieved a landing on a ship two months later on 18 January 1911. He died on 19 October 1911, in a plane crash while flying at an exhibition in Georgia, USA. Photograph from the Bain News Service.
