This image is part of the feature Gran Sasso

Caption: The tunnel leading to the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, the largest underground laboratory in the world. It is aimed at studying the properties of subatomic particles from astrophysical sources. The main experiments involve the detection of neutrinos, emitted by the Sun and supernovae explosions, high- energy particles in the cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles. The laboratory lies under 1400m of rock which provides a shield equivalent to 3500m of water. This does not affect the flux of neutrinos but stops the low-energy particles in the cosmic rays.
