Caption: Flamsteed's celestial atlas. Title page of the Atlas Coelestis (celestial atlas, 1729), a book containing celestial maps derived from data compiled by John Flamsteed (1646-1719). Flamsteed was a British astronomer, the first Astronomer Royal, appointed by King Charles II and charged with compiling accurate tables of lunar and stellar positions. Over his lifetime Flamsteed accurately plotted the positions of over 3000 stars visible from the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England. Ten years after his death, Atlas Coelestis was published. The maps of the heavens it contained were based on the tables compiled by Flamsteed.
