Caption: Enrico Fermi. Portrait of the Italian-US nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi (1901-1954). Fermi modified classical statistical mechanics, contributing to the Fermi-Dirac distribution, a fundamental part of statistical physics. Fermi won the 1938 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on using neutrons to initiate nuclear reactions. He lived in the USA from 1938, building the world's first atomic pile (reactor) in 1942. He joined the atomic bomb project at Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, in 1944. Photographed in Italy. THIS IMAGE MAY NOT BE USED TO STATE OR IMPLY THE ENDORSEMENT BY AIP OF ANY PRODUCT OR SERVICE
