Caption: Leon Festinger. Portrait of the American social psychologist Leon Festinger (1919-1989). Festinger was born in New York City, obtaining his doctorate in psychology in 1942, from the State University of Iowa. In his 1957 book, Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, Festinger viewed people as needing to have balance in their thoughts, as well as their actions. This influential theory prompted much research in the following years, and continues to guide current research. Photographed at the University of Minnesota, USA, in 1954. ***** NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL *****
