Caption: Dr. Simon Flexner (1863 - 1946), American pathologist. Flexner, the elder brother of Abraham Flexner, taught at Johns Hopkins Uniersity and the University of Pennsylvania before becoming the first director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation. He is known for his work on experimental epidemiology and venoms, poliomyelitis, serum treatment of cerebrospinal meningitis, and for isolating a bacillus of dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae).
