Caption: Roger Fenton (1819-1869), British photographer, dressed in a Zouave outfit. Fenton, who is holding a rifle, is dressed in the distinctive clothing of a French Zouave soldier. Fenton was one of the first war photographers. This photograph, by his assistant Marcus Fitzell Sparling (1822-1860), was taken in 1855 during their trip to the Crimea to document the Crimean War (1854-1856), where the French, British and Turks were fighting the Russians. Fenton returned from the Crimea with over 350 photographs, though most of them were posed.
