Caption: Italian-American physicist, Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), who demonstrated that nuclear transformation occurs in almost every element subjected to neutron bombardment. This work led to the discovery of slow neutrons and nuclear fission. Fermi was central in the development of the first nuclear reactor and known for his work on quantum theory. In 1938 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
