Caption: William Alfred Fowler (1911-1995), American astrophysicist. Fowler worked on the nuclear reactions in the interior of stars. He co-authored the 1957 paper that explained the observed cosmic abundances of the elements by their production by these stellar nuclear reactions. This work earned Fowler the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics.
