Caption: Sandra Faber (born 1944), US astronomer and astrophysicist. Professor Sandra Moore Faber is most famous for her work as head of the team (known as the Seven Samurai) that discovered a mass concentration called 'The Great Attractor', a gravity anomaly in intergalactic space. In 1976 she discovered the so-called 'Faber-Jackson relation', along with Robert Earl Jackson, linking the brightness of elliptical galaxies to the speeds of stars orbiting within them. She also played a major role in the development of the world's largest telescopes, twin 400-inch 'Keck Telescopes' in Hawaii. Other research projects include an attempt to measure the total mass-density of the universe. Photographed 25 February 1993.
