Caption: Portrait of Asa Gray (1810-88), American botanist. Gray was educated at Fairfield Medical School, obtaining his MD in 1831. He then developed his interest in botany, collaborating with the prominent botanist John Torrey. 1838 saw Gray's first trip to Europe, examining type specimens of American plants in various herbaria. Back in America, he became professor of natural history at Harvard in 1842. In 1851, again in Europe, Gray met Charles Darwin. The two corresponded extensively, and when "Origin of Species" was published Gray became its leading advocate in America. It was Gray's own work, however, that made his worldwide reputation as a botanist.
