Caption: Bernard Le Guenno. Portrait of Bernard Le Guenno (born 1950) seen before electron micrograph images of viruses. An epidemiologist at the Pasteur Inst- itute, he researches viruses that cause haemorrha- gic fevers. These are a group of fevers spread by arthropods (mosquitos and ticks). He has spent 3 years directing studies in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). He also worked for the Pasteur Institute in Dakar where he set up the unit for haemorrhagic fevers and arboviruses. These fevers spread to humans from arthropods. They are caused by arboviruses such as the Ebola virus, and the viruses causing yellow and dengue fever. Photographed in 1996.
