Caption: William Timothy Gowers. Portrait of British mathematician William Timothy Gowers (born 1963). Gowers is a lecturer at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Cambridge University, England. He gained a doctorate from Cambridge University before moving to University College London, England, in 1991. He remained there until late 1995, before moving back to Cambridge. He was awarded the Prize of the European Mathematical Society in 1996, and in 1998 was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest award in mathematics. His main work has been on Banach spa- ces, sets in which functions replace numbers. He was made Rouse Professor of Mathematics in 1998.
