Caption: Sir Patrick Geddes. Portrait of Sir Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), Scottish biologist and sociologist. Geddes was professor of botany at Dundee University, Scotland, when he published his book The Evolution of Sex in 1889. He became interested in the problems of the human environment, which led him to study sociology. He believed that human beings could best develop in a favourable and integrated environment. He went on to pioneer town planning and published books on the subject such as City Development (1904) and Cities in Evolution (1915). He studied a number of cities and drew up plans for the improvement of Edinburgh and a number of cities in India.
