Caption: John Ellard Gore (1845-1910), Irish astronomer and science populariser. Gore was trained as an engineer and in 1868 travelled to the Punjab, India to assist with the construction of a canal. He spent his spare time observing the stars. His detailed studies, which concentrated on double and variable stars, were remarkable given that he never had a large telescope and made most of his observations with binoculars. When he returned to Ireland in 1879, he wrote several books on cosmology, speculating about the nature and origins of the universe.
