Caption: Galen (c.129-200 AD), Ancient Greek physician and anatomist, treating a gladiator in Pergamum. Now in Turkey, this Greek city-state was Galen's birthplace and where he gained his knowledge of human anatomy. He left Pergamum in 162 AD and travelled to Rome. His ideas would dominate western medicine for the next 1500 years. Artwork from the 19th century book Vies des Savants Illustres.
