After gradua- ting in geology from New Brunswick University, he followed a career in mineral exploration before turning to research. In 1990 he discovered the Chicxulub crater on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. This crater was caused by a giant meteorite hitting the Earth about 65 million years ago. The crater is thought to be about 120 kilometres across. He now conducts research for the Geological Survey of Canada. Photographed in 1997.
