Caption: Gerardus 't Hooft. Portrait of the Dutch theoretical physicist Gerardus 't Hooft, who won the 1999 Nobel Prize for physics jointly with Martinus Veltman. Born in 1946 in Den Helder, the Netherlands, 't Hooft started working with Veltman at the University of Utrecht in 1969. In 1971, together with Veltman, he helped to elucidate the mathematics of the theory of electroweak interactions in physics. 'T Hooft has been a professor of physics at the University of Utrecht since 1977. Photographed in 1995.
