Caption: Professor Eric J. Heller. Portrait of Eric J. Heller (born 1946), professor of physics at Harvard University and artist. Heller is a theoretical physicist, whose work includes studies in wave behaviour, atomic collisions and chaos theory in both classical and quantum physics. Using powerful computers, he is able to simulate the behaviour of matter in these theoretical systems, and to manipulate and colour the results in order to produce works of art which appeal to non-scientists. An example of Heller's work, a coloured image of a four-dimensional mathematical shape known as a torus, is seen behind him. Photographed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
