Ambrose Hanckwitz. Portrait of Ambrose Godfrey Hanckwitz, German chemist (1660-1741). He was Robert Boyle's assistant who was the first to manufacture and sell phosphorus on any scale. Seen in this illustration is his apparatus for this manufacture. Illustration by G. Vertue in 1718.
