Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Stephen Hawking (born 1942), British theoretical physicist. Hawking is known for his work on cosmology and black holes. He also wrote the popular science book A Brief History of Time (1988), which describes several complex concepts in a simple way. Hawking was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neurone disease, in 1963. He was given only a few years to live. Since a tracheostomy in 1985 he has spoken using a voice synthesiser.
