Caption: Victor Franz Hess (1883-1964), Austrian-US physicist and Nobel laureate. Hess was educated at Graz University and worked in Vienna and Innsbruck, as well as in the USA. He lived in the USA from 1944. Hess shared the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physics with Carl David Anderson. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Hess's discovery of cosmic radiation. Hess was interested in locating the source of background radiation that causes ionization of air even in the absence of radioactive materials. He proved that the radiation comes from space, and his experiments in 1911-12 with balloon flights showed ionization to be greater at altitude than at ground level. Photographed at Fordham University, New York, USA.
