Caption: Jacques Hatzfeld, stem cell researcher, in front of a poster explaining mechanisms of cell biology. As of 2006, Hatzfeld was director of the Human Stem Cell Biology Laboratory in Villejuif, France. This laboratory is part of CNRS (the French national research organisation). Hatzfeld and his team have spent 10 years developing a model to allow the study of adult human stem cells. These are difficult to study, and age more quickly than embryonic stem cells. Stem cells are studied for their potential to differentiate into any type of tissue. Cultured stem cells could be used to treat disorders of the blood, heart, kidneys, brain and many other tissues and organs.
