Caption: John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911), British neurologist. Jackson is best known for his work on epilepsy, from which his wife suffered. He described patterns of localized convulsive seizures, now known as Jacksonian epilepsy, which suggested to him that different areas of the brain were responsible for different motor functions. He also studied temporal lobe epilepsy and described the pattern of disease of the cerebellum. Jackson also contributed to the understanding of loss of language following stroke. Much of his working life was spent as a physician at several London hospitals including the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic in Queen Square.
