Johnson worked at the University of Birmingham, where he pioneered astrophysics. He also worked to popularise science, writing several books on astrophysics and on the physics of time, and gave many public lectures on the subjects. He was a friend of Walter de la Mare, and also wrote on philosophical and theological matters.
