Caption: Mob attacking Jacquard in Lyon, France. The French weaver Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834, lower left) invented an improved mechanical loom in 1804. When this was introduced into factories, there were riots among workers who feared losing their jobs. There were also several attempts on Jacquard's life. Artwork from Les Martyrs de la Science (G. Tissandier, 1882).
