Caption: Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777), French botanist, examining a plant. Jardin was a professor at the Jardin des Plantes, (then the Jardin du Roi), Paris, France's main botanical garden. He founded a method of plant classification based on anatomical features and began the process of putting plant genera into families. Engraving from Les Savants Modernes (1899).
