Caption: Edward Kelly. Engraving of Edward Kelly (1555- 1593), English alchemist and sorcerer. Originally an apothecary's assistant, Kelly was briefly a student at Oxford University before becoming a fraudulent lawyer. He persuaded John Dee, an alchemist who was enjoying royal favour, to accept him as an assistant. They followed an adventurous career as sorcerers in Europe trying to discover the "philosopher's stone" that would convert common metals into gold. Their friendship was damaged when Kelly decided that they must share their wives. Kelly was imprisoned in Prague by the Emperor Rudolf and was killed whilst trying to escape.
