Caption: Clarence King (1842-1908), American explorer and geologist. King graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University and joined one of the four rival American geological surveys that were exploring the territories. His work concentrated mainly on California, particularly the Sierra Nevada. After the Civil War, in 1879, the surveys merged and King was appointed as director of the new US Geological Survey. However, he left in 1881 to search for gold in Mexico.
