Caption: Yuri Kondratuk (1897-1942), Russian science fiction writer, engineer and scientist. Kondratuk, who spent much of his life designing industrial buildings and granaries, produced a book entitled "The Conquest of Interplanetary Space". It brought him a little success, and fame amongst interested circles - including the pioneering rocket scientist Tsiolkovsky, with whom he began corresponding. Kondratuk was imprisoned during Stalin's purges but released before the Second World War, eventually being killed in 1942 whilst fighting the Nazis.
