Caption: Nikolai Kibalchich (1854-1881), Russian journalist, revolutionary, medical student and rocket scientist. Kibalchich was trained in medicine but, after distributing a prohibited book, was arrested in 1875. On his release he joined the People's Will, a party whose goal was the overthrow of the Tsarist regime. He became their explosives expert and his grenades were used in the execution of Tsar Alexander II. He was arrested and, whilst awaiting execution, wrote a paper on the possibility of using rockets for space exploration. It was only published after his death.
