Caption: Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich (1912-1986), Soviet economist and Nobel laureate. Kantorovich was a mathematician who worked for the Soviet government. He was given the task of optimizing industrial productivity, and from this he developed his economic theory on the optimal allocation of resources. This work won him the 1975 Nobel Prize for Economics. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and well as being awarded the Lenin Prize. Photographed in 1982, in Moscow, Russia.
