Caption: Edward Ball Knobel (1841-1930), British astronomer. Knobel was a London businessman who worked as a geologist and chemist. From the 1870s he turned to amateur astronomy, purchasing his own telescope and working on star catalogues. He translated Arabic and Persian star catalogues and published a new version of Ptolemy's Almagest, using all available Greek, Latin and Arabic sources. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society twice, first in the year 1892-3, and then the year 1900-01. A crater on Mars was named in his honour.
