Caption: Yulii Borisovich Khariton (1904-1996), Soviet nuclear physicist. Khariton, who studied under Ernest Rutherford as a student, was the chief designer of the Soviet atomic bomb. He was later elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences. His awards include three medals for Hero of Socialist Labour, three USSR State prizes, and the Lenin Prize. Photographed in 1980, in Russia.
