Caption: Boris Vasilyevich Kukarkin (1909-1977), Soviet astrophysicist and astronomer, operating a calculating machine. Kukarkin, who worked for most of his career at Moscow University, specialised in the study of variable stars, and also worked on globular clusters. He was President of the Commission on Variable Stars of the Astronomical Union of the USSR Academy of Sciences for six years from 1956. He also founded the research journal Peremennye Zvezdy. His awards include the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Photographed in 1966, in Moscow, Russia.
