Caption: Portrait of Hans Lippershey, Dutch optician, born 1587 & died 1619. The engraving was taken from Pierre Borel's book De Vero Telescopii Inventore, published in 1655. Lippershey is credited with designing & building the first telescope, which he attempted to sell to the Dutch government for use in warfare. The government tried to keep the device secret, but rumours spread as far as Galileo in Italy who promptly built one & turned it to the stars.
