Caption: American physicist Leon Lederman, photographed in 1979. Born 1922, Lederman led the team which discovered the upsilon particle at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), the particle physics laboratory near Chicago, on June 30 1977. The upsilon was the first particle found which contains a bottom (or beauty) quark. Lederman has been director of Fermilab since 1979.
