Caption: Mezzotint portrait of Ferdinand, Viscomte de Lesseps (1805-94), French civil engineer. De Lesseps was born at Versailles, and spent his early career in the diplomatic service. In 1854 he started planning the Suez Canal, and oversaw its construction between 1860 and 1869. As a result, he was created a viscount among many other honours. In 1881 work began on another grand canal scheme, this time in Panama. In 1892, however, the management of the project were charged with breach of trust. De Lesseps and his son, Charles, were both found guilty and the project was abandoned.
