Caption: The British geologist Sir Charles Lyell, 1797- 1875. Lyell at first embarked on a legal career but his interest in geology led in 1823 to his appointment as secretary of the Geological Society. In 1830 he published the popular Principles of Geology in which he supported, with his data, the Principle of Uniformitarianism elaborated by James Hutton (1726-1797). This stated that rocks and geological formations are the results of ordinary slow processes such as erosion and not a past catastrophe. In 1863 Lyell published The Antiquity of Man in which he supported Darwin's concept of evolution and tried to apply it to the human species.
