Caption: Professor John Lawton, Director of the NERC Centre for Population Biology (CPB). Lawton was responsible for much of the development of the Ecotron project. The project aims to study the effects of species diversity and climate change on small, model ecosystems. Each ecosystem contains a small number of plant and insect species, and is enclosed in a 4 square metre sealed chamber. The amount of light and water fed to each ecosystem is controlled, and samples of the air in the chamber are analysed for carbon dioxide and oxygen. The CPB is at the Imperial College Field Station, Silwood Park, Berkshire. Photographed in 1994.
