Caption: Joshua Lederberg. Portrait of the US geneticist Joshua Lederberg (1925-2008). Lederberg discovered that bacteria can reproduce sexually by a process he named conjugation. He showed that about one in ten million bacteria in a colony of Escherichia coli reproduced this way rather than asexually. He introduced the technique of 'replica plating' for isolating mutants from normal bacteria, and also discovered transduction, a natural form of genetic engineering.
