Caption: Louis and Mary Leakey (1903-1972 and 1913-1996), British palaeontologists, studying fossils in the field. Louis and Mary Leakey made a number of significant discoveries in Olduvai gorge, Tanzania. In 1959 Mary found a fossil skull of Paranthropus boisei (formerly Australopithecus and Zinjanthropus boisei) that was 1.75 million years old. They also discovered stone tools, the remains of Homo habilis and the Laetoli footprint trail that showed that hominids had acquired a bipedal gait by 3.6 million years ago.
