Caption: Willis Eugene Lamb, Jr. (born 1913), US physicist and Nobel laureate. Lamb was educated in Los Angeles and at Berkeley, and during his long career has worked in New York, Harvard, Oxford (England), Yale and Arizona. Lamb shared the 1955 Nobel Prize for Physics with Polykarp Kusch. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Lamb's discoveries concerning the fine structure of the hydrogen spectrum. He identified a particular feature of the spectrum that is called the Lamb shift. This work was carried out in 1946, and led to the development of the theory of quantum electrodynamics.
