Caption: Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentyev (1900-1980), Soviet mathematician and hydrodynamicist, giving a lecture. Lavrentyev's work included studies of the physics of explosions, which was later applied to construction work including that of dams. He was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences, and was Chairman of its Siberian Branch from 1957 to 1975, founding its Institute of Hydrodynamics. He also founded the research town of Akademgorodok, in Siberia. His awards include Hero of Socialist Labour, the Lenin Prize, the USSR State Prize, and the Lomonosov Gold Medal. Photographed in 1969, in Russia.
