Caption: Bernard-Germain-Etienne, comte de Lacepede (1756-1825), French naturalist. Lacepede continued the work started by Buffon, classifying oviparous quadripeds, reptiles, fish and whales. He also wrote treatises on music, physics, electricity and history. In 1804 Lacepede gave up his scientific work for a political career, holding several state offices. Engraving from Vies des Savants Illustres (1875).
